We are so proud of you and your inspiring win, Victoria! When did you know that you wanted to become an entrepreneur?
Victoria: My grandparents were entrepreneurs, so I think I was born with the desire. But I knew with certainty with my very first job at 14 and 1/2. I worked for a couple who started a video store at a time when Blockbuster was booming — but the mega chain wouldn’t open a store in my Brooklyn neighborhood so this couple did. I learned so much about what it takes to be a founder, to create space, to build community with your company. I immediately began “side hustles,” at first for extra income but ultimately because it spoke to my desire to build and give back, both for my family and my community.
That's amazing, Victoria! We can only imagine how that early experience shaped your drive to fill a need in whatever market you served. We love to see it!
You've been an entrepreneur for awhile. So today, what does a *typical day* in your entrepreneurial lifestyle look like?
Victoria: Each day starts with an hour of personal reflection — prayer, exercise, affirmations, journaling, and setting intentions for that day. This practice helps me stay grounded and allows me to face any challenges that may arise with a more focused outlook. I check in with customers in real time at least once a day (text, email, phone, in person) and spend at least 20 minutes each day studying industry trends. Schedules at The Scented Webb are often driven by whether they are during event or production weeks. These tend to shift the priority to more internal tasks and demand intentional planning to maintain work/life balance. I also make time to have daily interactions with other founders. These connections not only strengthen my business, but provide opportunities of growth and collaboration for me personally. So many tips, tricks, leads, partnerships, and ideas have come from these interactions. I end each day reflecting on the things I’m grateful for — even on not so great days, I express gratitude for the lessons learned.
You're a wonderful collaborator! Prioritizing this in your business can make this journey feel less lonely.
So tell us, what were some of your *greatest fears* have you had on your entrepreneurial journey?
Victoria: People often talk about how many businesses fail, and I was scared that, despite management and business experience, and so much planning, it would still be an uphill battle. Then I realized how many people literally never step out on faith and try to make their idea a reality. As much as I am still growing and learning in this business, I stopped letting fear get in the way of the dream and set as my goal to get better every day.
We love a Founder with tenacity! Yessss, Victoria! Can you share a bit about what your support system looks like as an entrepreneur?
Victoria: My biggest support system as an entrepreneur is other entrepreneurs! While I have family and friends who also support me, other founders understand my frustrations in a way only they can. They also celebrate my wins and help me strategize after challenges. I am so grateful for local business cohorts I have been part of in the Kansas City area introducing me to many of these amazing business owners.
