August marks National Black Business Month, a time to intentionally celebrate, support, and spend time with Black-owned businesses across the country.
And this year at Blaze Group, we’re honoring that tradition by doing what we do best: centering the voices of Black entrepreneurs.
We’ve launched a storytelling campaign called “Tell Your (Money) Story,” inviting founders to speak openly — not just about their wins, but about the real financial paths they’ve walked.
Some stories are about bootstrapping.
Some are about generational strategy.
Some are about coming back from the edge.
All of them are deeply powerful. Because when Black entrepreneurs tell their money stories in their own words, we can hold that relatable context in both of our hands, carrying their wisdom + brilliance forward.
Why It Matters
Financial literacy isn’t about spreadsheets.
It’s about being empowered to decide a course of action.
It’s about expansion, stability, and safety along a long-stretching path.
It’s about remembering what we already know. :)
For me, the power of storytelling around money has always been familiar. I come from a community that knew how to raise capital.
We sold raffle tickets at church. We peeled off dollar bills from a fold to support a family cause. We sold chocolate bars so our class could afford big field trips.
We knew how to quantify a need, articulate a goal, and rally the village. That is fundraising. That is strategic capital raising. That is entrepreneurship.
Textbooks didn't teach us these principles. We had tradition. We had culturally-relevant strategies. And we had each other.
That’s why I believe it’s so important for us to tell our own stories.
To give our own language to what we’ve always done.
These entrepreneurial concepts are not new — they’re just rarely contextualized in ways that reflect our lived experiences.
There’s no need to erase memory to fit into someone else’s cultural mold. We can start from memory. From rhythm. From generations of steady, masterful solutions.
We know entrepreneurship. And through the power of our collective testimonies, we rise into elevated consciousness.
