Updated for Black Business Month 2026

Every August, Black Business Month gives us an opportunity to celebrate Black entrepreneurship.

Supporting Black businesses isn't only about where we shop.

It's also about where we bank.

Banks and credit unions are part of the infrastructure that makes entrepreneurship possible. They hold our deposits, process our payments, extend credit, finance homes and businesses, and help capital circulate throughout communities.

Across the United States, hundreds of financial institutions have been built to serve Black communities.

Some are banks with names you may recognize.

Others are small credit unions connected to churches, HBCUs, teachers, municipal employees, labor organizations, and neighborhoods.

Together, they tell a much bigger story about Black financial infrastructure in America.

At Blaze Group, we've been documenting these institutions for years. Our latest directory includes 254 Black-owned banks and credit unions across the United States.

Black Banking Is Bigger Than the Banks You Know

When conversations about Black-owned financial institutions happen nationally, they tend to center on a few dozen banks.

Those institutions matter tremendously.

But they are only part of the financial ecosystem.

Look deeper, and you'll find other institutions such as Councill Federal Credit Union in Huntsville, Alabama; FAMU Federal Credit Union in Tallahassee; Howard University Employees Federal Credit Union in Washington, D.C.; Shaw University Federal Credit Union in Raleigh; Tennessee State University Federal Credit Union in Nashville; Xavier University Employees Federal Credit Union in New Orleans; and Virginia State University Federal Credit Union in Petersburg.

You'll find credit unions founded around churches and faith communities.

You'll find institutions serving teachers, public employees, transportation workers, postal workers, veterans, and entire neighborhoods.

You'll also find Black-owned banks including Citizens Trust Bank, Carver State Bank, Liberty Bank and Trust Company, OneUnited Bank, First Independence Bank, Mechanics & Farmers Bank, Industrial Bank, The Harbor Bank of Maryland, United Bank of Philadelphia, Unity National Bank, and others.

The ecosystem is not concentrated in a few bustling cities or a handful of well-known regions.

It stretches across the country.

In many cases, these institutions have been serving communities that larger financial institutions historically overlooked.

Your Bank Account Is Part of Your Financial Strategy

For entrepreneurs especially, choosing a financial institution shouldn't be an afterthought.

Your banking relationship becomes part of the financial infrastructure of your business.

As your company grows, you may need more than somewhere to deposit revenue.

You may need:

  • business checking and savings accounts

  • merchant and payment services

  • business credit cards

  • working capital

  • lines of credit

  • equipment financing

  • commercial real estate financing

  • treasury and cash-management services

  • introductions to other financial resources

That is why we encourage entrepreneurs to think beyond simply opening an account.

Build a banking relationship.

Learn what your financial institution offers. Introduce yourself to a banker.

Understand what information lenders evaluate. Keep your financial statements organized. Build a history of deposits and responsible account management.

And as your business evolves, periodically ask yourself whether your financial relationships are evolving with it.

Consider Putting Your Deposits to Work

Supporting Black-owned financial institutions does not mean every entrepreneur needs to move every dollar they have.

Your financial strategy should still consider products, fees, technology, deposit insurance, accessibility, lending capabilities, and the specific needs of your business.

But there may be an opportunity to intentionally place some of your financial activity with institutions serving Black communities.

That could mean opening a savings account.

Establishing a business checking relationship.

Moving a portion of your deposits.

Applying for financing.

Or simply learning which institutions operate in your community.

Deposits matter because deposits help form the foundation from which financial institutions can lend and invest.

Where we bank is, therefore, another way we participate in the financial ecosystem around us.

The Directory: 254 Black-Owned/-Led Banks & Credit Unions

Below is our current directory of Black-owned banks and credit unions across the United States.

Because financial institutions merge, close, change names, expand their fields of membership, or receive new charters, this is a living resource. We encourage readers and institutions to send us updates as the landscape changes.
